A new HELP (Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals) course on trafficking in human beings was launched for 31 legal professionals – judges (criminal, civil and misdemeanour) and prosecutors on 15 October 2020. This course was prepared within the action “Preventing and combating trafficking in human beings in Serbia” in co-operation with the Serbian Judicial Academy.

The course start is concomitant with the 18 October, European Anti-trafficking Day, and aims to improve the participants’ knowledge of the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings and their capacities to ensure appropriate protection to victims of trafficking and prosecution and punishment of perpetrators, in line with European standards.

The Council of Europe Anti-trafficking Convention has become the key reference text in Europe. Effective prevention of trafficking, prosecution of traffickers and protection of victims can be achieved only through the application in practice of a solid legal and policy frameworks and genuine working partnerships amongst anti-trafficking actors”, stated Nadia Cuk, the Deputy Head of the Council of Europe Office in Belgrade.

Prevention of trafficking in human beings needs to stay continuous priority for all of us as professionals. Programme such as HELP should be widely used to improve our knowledge, experience and capacities”, concluded Nenad Vujic, Director of Judicial Academy, and Mitar Djuraskovic, National Anti-trafficking Co-ordinator.

HELP tutors with extensive and long-lasting professional experience in this field adapted the course to the Serbian legal and policy frameworks and professionals. The course will unite theory and practise, provide information, participative case studies and examples from practise.

The action “Preventing and combating trafficking in human beings in Serbia” is implemented under the joint European Union/Council of Europe programme „Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019 – 2022”.
